THE IMPACT OF UV RAYS and AIR POLLUTION ON YOUR SKIN

Air pollution particles and ultraviolet rays are two major contributors to skin aging, acne and skin cancer.

Exposure to UV radiation from sun rays causes:

- Up to 90% of the visible changes attributed to aging (Sun Protection, a primary teaching resource, WHO).

- Over 95% of all skin cancers, including melanomas (Australian Cancer Council).

Exposure to PM2.5 air pollutants contributes to:

- Skin aging, acne, dermatitis and psoriasis.

From inside:

Pollution particles smaller than 2.5 microns can penetrate into the bloodstream. Our bodies react expelling the toxins out of the system through the skin via the capillaries, as the dermis layer is also an auxiliary filtration and elimination system. When the skin is not able to filter properly, it can cause or worsen acne.

And outside:

The biggest danger pollution poses to our skin is an overload of free radical damage. Living in a city means you will be exposed to air pollution which harbours free radicals. Suffering from free radical damage everyday leads to compromised skin health as the free radicals interfere with cells and cause inflammation. Air pollution attacks our skin by breaking down the natural oils which protect us; this leaves us susceptible to redness and irritation. The contaminants can even penetrate skin tissues, clogging pores and causing an inflammatory response and skin cells death (apoptotic process).
